HARALSON

Rating:

Parentage / Origin : Malinda x Wealthy from Minnesota 1922

Harvest / Season : Mid September through October

Description: Firm texture with a complex tart flavor. Good for fresh eating and cooking. Especially good pie apple. The fruit will store for 4 to 5 months. Tree is of low vigor and easily trained. Tends to be biennial bearing. Fruit may be prone to watercore and russeting. Introduced in 1922.

Other Characteristics : I've seen these grown in Michigan and they do not finish as well as in Minnesota - they seem to do better in the colder zones (3,4,5)

HONEYCRISP

Rating:

Parentage / Origin : Keepsake; (MN447 x Northern Spy) x unknown

Harvest / Season : Mid-Late Season

Description: CRISP, coarse textured, Sweet/tart complex flavor that appeals to more people that any other apple, I know.! Excellent keeper. Better eaten fresh than baked. Medium to large. 2-3/4" to 4" or larger. King fruit thinning may be useful to reduce size in some situations. Color: 60-90 percent dappled red over yellow in cool climates. May not color as well in warmer climates. Other factors critical for high color are good sun exposure and avoiding excess nitrogen.

Other Characteristics : Hardiness zone: 4,5,6,7,8,9. Scab resistant, Low vigor after cropping, do not allow to overcrop as the tree may "stall out" and lose vigor. Grows well on dwarfing rootstocks (avoid"mark" rootstock)

HONEYGOLD

Rating:

Parentage / Origin : Golden Delicious x Haralson 1970

Harvest / Season : Mid-late Season

Description: Golden to yellow-green fruit that is sweet, crisp, and juicy. Excellent for fresh eating and also good for cooking. The fruit will store for 2 to 3 months. Tree is easy to manage but susceptible to fire blight. Wait for yellow background and pronounces lenticles on the fruit for the best flavor. It's worth the wait.

Other Characteristics : This apple bruises easier than any other I have grown, handle appropriately!
