Here you will find a list of Apple Varieties and descriptions to help you decide which Apples you want to plant in your backyard orchard.

I have grown most of these varieties at one time or another in my 35+ years if growing fruit. Many varieties are hardy Minnesota strains which is where I am growing fruit now. I grew up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania where I grew many tree fruits including Apples, Peaches, Pears,Cherries, and Nectarines.

The information is as accurate as I can do, and I have cited sources for information that comes from outside sources. If you find errors or you would like to contribute additional variety listings email me with your request.

BEACON

Parentage / Origin :Malinda x Wealthy from University of Minnesota 1936
Harvest / Season : Early Season. Mid to Late August

Description: A juicy bright red, medium-sized apple that is wonderful for eating. Flesh is mildly acid. Hardy, heavy bearing tree. Short storage life. Ripens randomly throughout the tree, requires several pickings.

Other Characteristics : Zone 3-6. Susceptible to fireblight, but will survive even heavy infections.

CHESNUT CRAB

Parentage / Origin : Malinda open pollinated 1949

Harvest / Season : Early-Mid Season

Description: This apple is one of Minnesota's best kept secrets. It has a rather homely appearance, red stripes on a yellow background accompanied with the typical russet. Sweet and "nutty" flavor, it is the best tasting apples in its season.

CONNEL RED

Rating:

Parentage / Origin : Naturally occurring red sport of Fireside.

Harvest / Season : Late season, develop waxy surface later in season, will tolerate froste and mild freezes during harvest.

Description: Deep red color on Large dense sweet apples. Long keeper if harvested at maturity before frosts. Distinctive aroma that it shares with Fireside, its striped commercial "brother"

CORTLAND

Rating:

Parentage / Origin : New York State Experiment Station, 1898

Harvest / Season : Mid Season

Description: A McIntosh type with sweet vinous flavor, but not all of Mac's aromatics. Tart and tangy white crisp flesh; one of the best salad apples because it doesn't brown quickly. Hangs on the tree better than McIntosh, and more crisp in hot weather. Vigorous, long-lived tree is annually productive and starts bearing early.

Other Characteristics : Very Hardy, consistent producer. This is one of the very few varieties that we grow in Minnesota that does not ever show trunk damage from winter injury.Hardiness zones: 3,4,5,6,7,8,9

DOLGO CRAB

Parentage / Origin : Russia, 1879

Harvest / Season : Early/Mid Season

Description: Siberian crab that was imported from Russia by the plant breeder, Hansen of South Dakota, and introduced in 1897. Dolgo in Russian means long and refers to the shape of the fruit. The highly-flavored crimson fruit is about 1-inch in diameter, is olive-shaped and rich in pectin. The vigorous tree grows upright with spreading willowy branches and has reddish-green, dense foliage. Excellent Crab apple jelly crab with a beautiful purple/crimson color. The apples high acidity make for great flavor!

Other Characteristics : It is resistant to scab, cedar apple rust, mildew and fireblight. This very hardy apple ripens in late August or early September. Hardiness zones: 4,5,6,7,8,9

DUCHESS

Rating:

Parentage / Origin : Origin: Russia, 1700, introduced into England c. 1815

Harvest / Season : Early - good for early season pies and apple crisps

Description: Good cooking apple, fair eating apple. Beautiful, medium to large sized greenish yellow with bright red stripes, splashes and russeted dots. Flesh fine, firm and juicy. flavor is tart, brisk and refreshing, first class. Keeps for only a few weeks.

Harvest / Season : Early - good for early season pies and apple crisps

Description: McIntosh type apple with better color and flavor. Dark red with heavy, waxy bloom and crisp, juicy flesh with some aromatic quality. Good fresh. Fruit hangs on tree longer than McIntosh. Very consistent annual producer. Excellent Salad apple. Marginally hardy on Minnesota

FIRESIDE

Harvest / Season : Late Season

Description: Very large fruit with sweet flavor and fine-grained flesh good for fresh eating, salad, and baked apples. Tree is vigorous and weeping. Late picked fruit develops a waxy/sticky film on the skin. Firreside and Connell Red (the Red colored sport of Fireside) have a unique apple aroma.

GOLDEN DELICIOUS

Parentage / Origin :West Virginia 1890

Harvest / Season : Late

Description: This widely adaptable golden apple is an ideal pollinizer because it blooms mid- season and has three different sets of blooms. Mild, sweet, distinctive flavor. Hight quality fruit of multi-purpose. The heavy crop can be picked over a period of time. Self Fertile

Other Characteristics : Good for all uses. Hrdiness zones: 5,6,7,8,9

Marginally hardy in Minnesota, not recommended for planting here, the tree may survive, but it will not bear fruit well.

GOLDEN RUSSET

Parentage / Origin : New York 1845

Harvest / Season : Late

Description: This is one of the "homeliest" apples we grow. The "champagne" of old-time cider apples, also delicious for eating and drying. Grey-green to golden bronze with a coppery orange cheek; heavily splotched with light brown russet. Crisp, highly flavored, fine-textured, yellow flesh makes very sugary juice. Shows some resistance to scab and cedar apple rust.

Other Characteristics : Good for all uses. Hrdiness zones: 4,5,6,7,8,9 Pollination required

Excels as a cider apple. Ripens after a frosts in Minnesota most years.

GRIMES GOLDEN

Parentage / Origin : West Virginia 1832

Harvest / Season : Late

Description: This is a variety I grew in Pennsylvania, it was always easy to sell. More complex flavor than its offspring Golden Delicious. Rich, spicy, tangy, sweet flavor with light yellow flesh. Best grown in warmer climates. Direct marketers seek out this fruit due to its superior dessert quality. Excellent pollinizer.

HARALSON

Rating:

Parentage / Origin : Malinda x Wealthy from Minnesota 1922

Harvest / Season : Mid September through October

Description: Firm texture with a complex tart flavor. Good for fresh eating and cooking. Especially good pie apple. The fruit will store for 4 to 5 months. Tree is of low vigor and easily trained. Tends to be biennial bearing. Fruit may be prone to watercore and russeting. Introduced in 1922.

Other Characteristics : I've seen these grown in Michigan and they do not finish as well as in Minnesota - they seem to do better in the colder zones (3,4,5)

HONEYCRISP

Parentage / Origin : Keepsake; (MN447 x Northern Spy) x unknown

Harvest / Season : Mid-Late Season

Description: CRISP, coarse textured, Sweet/tart complex flavor that appeals to more people that any other apple, I know.! Excellent keeper. Better eaten fresh than baked. Medium to large. 2-3/4" to 4" or larger. King fruit thinning may be useful to reduce size in some situations. Color: 60-90 percent dappled red over yellow in cool climates. May not color as well in warmer climates. Other factors critical for high color are good sun exposure and avoiding excess nitrogen.

Other Characteristics : Hardiness zone: 4,5,6,7,8,9. Scab resistant, Low vigor after cropping, do not allow to overcrop as the tree may "stall out" and lose vigor. Grows well on dwarfing rootstocks (avoid"mark" rootstock)

HONEYGOLD

Parentage / Origin : Golden Delicious x Haralson 1970

Harvest / Season : Mid-late Season

Description: Golden to yellow-green fruit that is sweet, crisp, and juicy. Excellent for fresh eating and also good for cooking. The fruit will store for 2 to 3 months. Tree is easy to manage but susceptible to fire blight. Wait for yellow background and pronounces lenticles on the fruit for the best flavor. It's worth the wait.

Description: Large, solid, strikingly bright red fruit. White, crisp, fine-grained, aromatic flesh with fine processing qualities. Blooms early, but ripens late. Excellent keeper, improves in storage.

JAPAN GOLD (MUTSU, CRISPEN)

Harvest / Season : Late

Description: Vigorous hybrid with large fruit. Skin green, maturing to yellow, sometimes blushed orange. Flesh yellow-white, firm, juicy, crisp but coarse; slightly aromatic. All-purpose apple, Excellent flavor. Highly resistant to frost injury. Prone to bitter pit. Multiple calcium sprays help reduce bitter pit.

JERSEY MAC

Parentage / Origin : New Jersey - New Jersey x Brunswick

Harvest / Season : Early

Description: Mcintosh hybrid. apples are very round, and have red skin with yellow patches. The greenish-white flesh inside is firm, fragrant and fine-grained. The taste is a good balance of sweetness and tartness. Does not store well, but it has great "McIntosh flavor for an early apple

Other Characteristics : Hardiness zone: 4,5,6,7,8,9 We grow it in Minnesota, but it is prone to winterkill in the more severe or snowless winters.

JONATHON

Parentage / Origin : Woodstock, NY 1862

Harvest / Season : Late

Description: Jonathan apple arose on the farm of Philip Rick, Woodstock, Ulster County, New York, USA. Believed to be an Esopus Spitzenburg seedling. A medium sized apple. Oblong to round-conical shape, ribbed and slightly five-crowned. Half to three-quarters flushed bright crimson with scattered broken red stripes on pale yellow. White flesh, slightly green tinged. Crisp, juicy and sweet with plenty of refreshing acidity. A dual purpose apple, good for pies and sauces. A weeping tree of moderate vigour. Good cropper. Prone to mildew.

KEEPSAKE

Description:Very hard and crisp with yellow flesh and an exotic sweet, spicy flavor. Good for fresh eating and cooking. The fruit will store for 6 months. Tree is of medium vigor and easy to manage. Fruit tends to be small to medium in size. Pick when color is fully developed, apples will sweeten in storage. Earlier picked fruit will keep the full 6 months and be sweet and crisp. It is one of the last varieties that we pick at Applejack Orchards

LIBERTY

Description: Resistant to apple scab and mildew. Some class this as anScab immune variety. A handsome red apple of the McIntosh type with a wonderful sweet/tart balance. Crisper, keeps better and more heat tolerant than other McIntosh hybrids. Fruit tends to be smaller in size (lunch box size) Consistent producer
